Austria’s involvement in eFTI4EU and eFTI4LIVE projects features in a special supplement published by Austrian transport weekly Verkehr, exploring how the country is preparing for digital freight information exchange.
Titled “Mission Possible: Österreich auf dem Weg zu eFTI” (Mission Possible: Austria on the Road to eFTI), the publication brings together six experts from public administration, infrastructure and the transport sector. Alongside their roundtable discussion, an interview with Austrian Minister Peter Hanke and a practical FAQ explain what eFTI could mean for businesses and authorities.
The discussion highlights cooperation between BMIMI, SCHIG and ASFINAG, covering preparations for Austria’s national eFTI Gate, experience from cross-border testing with Italy, and the integration of digital information into everyday transport operations. SCHIG also underlines how participation in eFTI4EU and eFTI4LIVE supports this work.
A central message runs throughout the publication: adoption depends on practical benefits and systems that are easy to use. Less paperwork, fewer errors and more efficient checks must be supported by affordable solutions that fit existing workflows, particularly for smaller businesses.
Experts also discuss data security, platform certification and the challenges of connecting road, rail and other transport modes. Standardised data and clear responsibilities across the transport chain are essential to making these connections work.
Looking ahead, the roundtable includes expectations about a possible future obligation for businesses to use eFTI. These are expert views, not an established deadline. The emphasis remains on making digital processes sufficiently useful and accessible to encourage uptake.
